It was a beautiful setting. A few different hiking trails with beautiful scenery as well. They make it fun with little scavenger hunts you can do and all of it is self-paced. You may have to get creative in entertaining yourself if you’re trying to stay there for more than an hour to hour and a half as there is not much to do other than the cave and the gift shop. Still worth the trip because the cave was beautiful! I love that they had workers stationed throughout the cave and giving the guests little tidbits of information. It’s thrilling to walk in a relatively large cave. Display boards and the stationed staff provide more educational insights !
Don’t forget to see the colorful display of the “time machine and transformation of various minerals” while in the dark.
An educational exhibit, no the geological history, for the entire family.
Good approach roads and plenty of car parking at the facility.
By T RS (11 months ago)This place is super cool. Literally! There’s so much to do one could plan a day trip. Parents can sit in the beer garden as the kids go sift rocks or play in the gardens. The bathrooms were nice and clean and the line to get tickets wasn’t very long at all. Highly recommend! It’s a beautiful experience.By Caasi Heckman (8 months ago)A wonderful experience! Our tour guide (Malorie, i think) was knowledgeable, kind, and very experienced. We learned a lot about caves and geological formations. The UV light rental adds a unique element as well. I highly recommend getting a black light and a bag, worth it in my opinion. Not very claustrophobic place, there was only one spot we needed to turn sideways to get through but most of it is very open and the whole thing has a walkway. Staff was very friendly. This place is so disappointing. Looks so cool on the outside but when you get inside it looks like their budget for the place was $12. It looks super cheap and it literally takes 5 minutes from start to finish. They had a sign outside that said “$5 today only!” So I thought I was getting a deal, but now I know why the tickets were so cheap. Then they try and con you into paying $36 for 4 pics of you with iron man. The cost was reasonable, but we also visited on $5 ticket day. Once you get into the building there’s not really much to do besides walk through. The time to go through the exhibit was 15 -20 minutes so it was a perfect to do before going home and the kiddos loved it running though looking at all the cool things and taking pictures. Then we seen it was only $5 to enter so we figured we would give it a try. To be honest it was a rather boring exhibit, by the time we got to the end and after walking on crooked floors we were feeling rather sick. Glad it was only $5 to get in, so it wasn’t to bad of a price, but if you want your pictures at the end, they make their money by charging $30. That was more then any of the other souvenir photos around the dells and the others include a free keychain. I would not recommend this place. Once you get inside you feel like the place needs some major touch ups. Five bucks a person ain’t bad, but if you gotta support a family, it’s not worth it. Its the Dell’s! This is such a unique place to visit, both the home and the other buildings. The original house is full of interesting architecture and a mix of interior design elements I haven’t seen combined like this anywhere else.
The other sections host a variety of collections, giant automated musical performance displays, whimsical scenery, and a lot of near-magical surprises. Like my personal favorite since I was little, the indoor carousel.
If you want to see all three sections arrive at least 3 hours before closing time.
I don’t know where to start…fortunately you will because there’s plenty of signage! Amazing place, a must see when in the area. By far the most interesting attraction in Wisconsin! Just be sure to give yourself at least 6 hours to see and enjoy. There are a few cafe areas, one was open, which is nice since we were 3 hours in and only halfway through. Definitely take your time, soak it all in!
Amazing experience to learn about the creator and original owner. It’s even more jaw dropping to see what he has amassed over the years. He collects items from multiple different cultures and across all sorts of time periods. There are tokens you can purchase and use to interact with various parts of the house.
I recommend purchasing tickets for all parts of the house and allocating at least 4-5 hours if you want to see everything reasonably / not rushed.
Great place to check out with lots of unique items and things all collected and put in one location for everyone to see. Highlights of the trip would probably include the whale, the carousel, the infinity room,(provided you don’t mind heights) the Japanese garden, as well as other rooms with many treasures to be seen, and it is even worth your while to check out the bathrooms on your way though as some have hidden treasures as well that are easily missed. Only bad thing is a very large museum and requires a lot of walking, so plan on almost a full day on your feet if you want to see it all!
The house on the rock is an incredible, overwhelming jumble of fascinations. The artist’s hand shows in the collection, the eclectic juxtaposition, and the worldview displayed. As an artistic installation and collection this is a joyful explosion. That said, I think it needs to be given more context for the modern audience. The welcome center would do well to give a critical eye to the methods of the artists and the appropriation of culture that is rampant throughout. This place is now a time capsule of worldviews from between 70 and 30 years ago. Some of which is presented in a way that suggests an educational worth.
This is not a museum of history. It is an artistic installation of fascinations that are now a part of the history of the work. That is a nuance which visitors should be prepared to appreciate as a part of the presentation.
